June 17, 2010
Dear Families, Friends and Guardians,
Social service agencies across the state are doing a grassroots action plan intended to apply significant pressure on Governor Pat Quinn. Our message is to use the authority given to his administration to protect the safety-net system of community-based services and supports for children and adults with developmental disabilities and mental illness. The message is simple – and our method of delivery is unique – but has the potential to exert enormous influence on the administration as they develop plans to implement the FY11 budget.
Included in this letter are flyers bearing this overall message:
“Community services and supports for persons with developmental disabilities and mental illness are important to healthy communities. Illinois can’t keep disrupting the lives of so many to save so little.”
• Don’t cut community services for persons with developmental disabilities and mental illness!
• Don’t risk layoffs and closures - pay service providers in a timely and consistent manner!
Please:
1.) Tape or glue a penny in the circle area;
2.) Each individual should sign the flyer and hand write a brief statement about the importance of community services; include an individual photograph of yourself or you with a consumer you support, and
3.) Mail each letter to:
The Honorable Pat Quinn
Illinois Governor
James R. Thompson Center
100 W. Randolph, 16-100
Chicago, IL 60601
The importance of this grassroots effort is to maximize the volume of individual letters that must be opened, photographs that are viewed by the Governor and his staff, and pennies that must be counted!!
The goal of this grassroots activity is to convince Governor Quinn and his administration what we already know – there are thousands of Illinoisans who recognize the importance of services and supports for children and adults with developmental disabilities and mental illness AND are willing to engage in this simple but effective action. The photographs and pennies included in each individualized letter will require the Governor’s office and his staff to take the time to open and read every single letter!
Thank you for your efforts in this important grassroots action plan!
Sincerely,
Lorraine Kopczynski
President/CEO
