PIONEER INTRODUCES NEW PROGRAM FEATURES IN 2007
New program features were made possible by the extensive renovations that took place in the Pioneer buildings in 2007. Pioneer clients now have the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of an expanded Assistive Technology Computer Lab, Snoezelen Room, Fitness Room, and Adaptive Kitchen.
SNOEZELEN ROOM
The Snoezelen Room is a comfortable and safe place where individuals experience exploration and discovery. This specialized multi-sensory environment has been proven to help persons overcome inhibitions, enhance their self esteem and reduce tension. The focus can be changed for each individual to increase communication, improve motor skills and allow for personal control of space.
ADAPTIVE KITCHEN
Pioneer’s new adaptive kitchen was designed for individuals with physical limitations to allow much more accessibility while learning skills in the kitchen. With the simple press of a button, the cabinet, stove range, and sink are all adjustable in height to allow almost anyone complete access to the full function of the kitchen. A fully adapted kitchen fosters independence, with a complete set of enabling kitchen utensils for ease of use. There is even a talking microwave for those with low vision.
ASSISTIVE COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY LAB
The goal of this lab is to provide computer access to consumers regardless of visual, cognitive, physical or learning disability. The Assistive Computer Technology (ACT) lab at Pioneer has doubled in size and incorporates computers that are accessible for all levels of understanding and ability. The computer lab utilizes assistive technology that helps users compensate for a disability by using a combination of software and hardware tools. It provides equal access to computer resources for persons with disabilities by providing basic ways for a person to interact with a computer. The computers allow someone to see the screen, understand what is on the screen, or provide alternatives to mouse and keyboard input. The lab is equipped with motorized adjustable tables to accommodate even the largest wheelchairs. Alternative keyboards and mice are available. Software that magnifies or reads aloud text, writes with pictures, or writes by voice are just some of the cutting edge technology that is available in the ACT Lab.
FITNESS ROOM
Physical exercise is a key component in maintaining a healthy weight as well as building and maintaining bone density and muscle strength. It also promotes physiological and psychological well-being and strengthens the immune system. Pioneer clients have full access to a physical fitness area for both cardio and strength training.
ART STUDIO
The Art Studio at our Central Building is a place where people learn, create, and enjoy artistic expression. The space has work tables, easels, supply cabinets, drying racks, storage for finished artwork, a computer for both educational and creative use, and of course, plenty of art supplies for our artists.
People in all programs currently use the room at different times for structured art lessons and/or sessions where artists freely explore their individual artistic styles.
Having a room dedicated to art ensures that people will have a place to channel their creativity and develop their artistic expression. |
